The NZ Citizenship Test: What to Expect

Everything you need to know about the upcoming New Zealand citizenship test — format, topics, pass mark, and how to prepare.

What Is the Citizenship Test?

The New Zealand government is introducing a citizenship test as part of the application process. The test is expected to launch in 2027.

Test Format

  • Questions: 20 multiple-choice questions
  • Time limit: Not yet confirmed
  • Pass mark: 75% (15 out of 20 correct)
  • Attempts: Up to 6 attempts allowed
  • Delivery: Computer-based at DIA offices

Topics Covered

The test will cover six core topic areas:

  1. New Zealand History — Early Māori settlement, European arrival, key events
  2. Te Tiriti o Waitangi — The Treaty of Waitangi and its significance
  3. Government & Democracy — How NZ is governed, elections, parliament
  4. Rights & Responsibilities — What it means to be a citizen
  5. NZ Society & Culture — Values, customs, diversity
  6. English Language — Tested separately for applicants aged 16–64

English Language Requirement

Applicants aged 16–64 must demonstrate English proficiency. Acceptable evidence includes:

  • IELTS, OET, PTE, or TOEFL test scores
  • Completion of a qualification taught in English
  • Having held NZ permanent residency for 5+ years (waiver may apply)
