Am I Eligible for NZ Citizenship? Complete Eligibility Guide
A plain-English breakdown of every eligibility requirement for New Zealand citizenship by grant, including residency calculations and character requirements.
Citizenship by Grant β Eligibility Requirements
You must meet all of the following requirements to be granted NZ citizenship.
1. Age
You must be 18 years or older. Children can be included in a parent's application or apply separately in limited circumstances.
2. Residency Status
You must hold a current New Zealand Permanent Resident visa or Resident visa with travel conditions that allow indefinite travel to NZ.
3. Physical Presence
This is the most complex requirement. You must have been physically present in New Zealand for:
- At least 1,260 days in the 5 years before applying
- At least 240 days in each of the last 3 years
Days that count: Days physically in New Zealand.
Days that don't count: Days overseas, even for short trips.
Use our Presence Calculator to calculate your days.
4. Good Character
DIA assesses your character based on:
- Criminal record (NZ and overseas)
- Immigration compliance history
- Tax compliance
- Any concerns raised during background checks
A criminal record does not automatically disqualify you, but serious offences may.
5. English Language
Applicants aged 16β64 must demonstrate English proficiency unless they qualify for an exemption.
See our English Language Guidance tool for details.
6. Intention to Remain in NZ
You must intend to continue living in New Zealand, or have compelling reasons that justify absence (e.g., working overseas for a NZ employer).
