How to Apply for New Zealand Citizenship by Grant

Overview
New Zealand citizenship by grant is available to permanent residents who have lived in New Zealand for at least 1,260 days over the past 5 years, including at least 240 days per year in each of the last 3 years.
Who Can Apply
To be eligible for citizenship by grant, you must:
- Be 18 years or older (or applying for a child)
- Hold NZ permanent residency or resident visa
- Have been physically present in NZ for at least 1,260 days over 5 years
- Be of good character
- Have sufficient knowledge of English (or have an exemption)
- Intend to continue living in New Zealand
The Application Process
Step 1 — Check your eligibility

Step 2 — Gather your documents
You will need your passport, proof of residency visa/PR, identity documents, and character references. Use our Application Checklist for a complete list.
Step 3 — Complete the form
Download and complete form DIA 9 (Application for grant of New Zealand citizenship) from the DIA website.
Step 4 — Submit and pay
Applications are submitted by post or in-person at a DIA office. The current application fee is $470.20.
Step 5 — Await processing
DIA typically takes several months to process applications. You will be notified by mail.
Step 6 — Citizenship ceremony
Once approved, you will be invited to a citizenship ceremony where you take the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance.
