Do You Need to Prove English?

Most applicants aged 16โ€“64 must demonstrate English language ability as part of the citizenship application.

Exemptions apply if:

  • You are under 16 or over 64
  • You have a disability that affects your ability to demonstrate English
  • You have been a NZ permanent resident for 5+ years (DIA may grant a waiver)
  • You completed a qualification taught in English in NZ

Accepted Evidence

DIA accepts the following as proof of English:

What If You Don't Have Evidence?

If you don't currently have evidence, you can:

  1. Sit a recognised English test (IELTS is the most widely available)
  2. Apply for a waiver if you've been a PR for 5+ years
  3. Enrol in an approved English course at a NZ polytechnic or community provider
