Overview

The total time from deciding to apply to attending your citizenship ceremony is typically 12–24 months based on current DIA processing times. Here is a realistic breakdown of each stage.

Stage 1: Eligibility Check (1–2 weeks)

Before applying, confirm you meet all requirements:

  • Physical presence (1,260 days in 5 years + 240 days per year for the last 3 years)
  • Permanent residency status
  • Age (18+)
  • Good character
  • English language (if applicable)

Use the Presence Calculator and Eligibility Calculator on this site to check your numbers before spending time on the application.

Stage 2: Document Gathering (2–6 weeks)

You will need:

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of residency visa / PR card
  • Identity documents for all family members included
  • Police certificates from every country you have lived in for 12+ months
  • Character references
  • Completed DIA form

Overseas police certificates can take 4–12 weeks to arrive — start this process first.

Stage 3: Application Submission

Applications are submitted by post or in person at a DIA office. Keep copies of everything.

The current DIA application fee is $470.20 (subject to change — verify at dia.govt.nz).

Stage 4: DIA Processing (6–18 months)

This is the longest variable stage. Current estimates from DIA:

  • Standard applications: 6–12 months
  • Applications requiring overseas criminal checks: 12–18 months
  • Complex or incomplete applications: longer

DIA will contact you if additional information is needed. Providing complete documentation upfront reduces delays significantly.

Stage 5: Approval Notification

You will receive a letter from DIA confirming approval. You do not become a citizen until you attend the ceremony.

Stage 6: Citizenship Ceremony (1–6 months after approval)

Ceremonies are coordinated by local councils. You will receive an invitation to attend. Wait times vary by council — some hold ceremonies monthly, others quarterly.
